Historic Leadership Circle Installation

CANADA – On the feast of St. Joseph, Tuesday, March 19th, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Canada officially installed the first Leadership Circle of the new Congregation. The ceremony, held at St. Peter-In-Chains Cathedral, Peterborough, ON, was attended by Sisters from the four founding Congregations, Associates and Companions, clergy (including bishops) and many friends and supporters. Chinese Sisters renew their Consecration

CHINA – On the feast day of Saint Joseph the Worker, May 1, 2013, two young Chinese Sisters renewed their vows of chastity, poverty and obedience before our Superior General, Sister Sally Marie Hodgdon in the chapel of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Chambéry in Rome.  Sister Sally received this renewal of first vows as a delegate for the Sisters’ Superior General, Sister Li Lianmei, who could not be in attendance from China. Sr. Laura Bufano attends UISG Meeting

ROME – S. Laura Bufano of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet was among the Sisters of St. Joseph and all other participants at the International Union of Superiors General meeting held in Rome at the beginning of May. We Are One

PERU, EAST TIMOR – The Sisters of St Joseph have brought all their overseas mission work under the one roof in Australia following the opening and blessing of the Mary MacKillop International office at Clyde on 4 April. Celebration of Unity

AUSTRALIA – NEW ZEALAND – There was great joy in Goulburn on the 19th March as parishioners from Goulburn and many rural parishes, 25 priests, 3 Bishops and many Sisters of St Joseph from across Australia and New Zealand arrived in Our Lady of Fatima Church to celebrate Eucharist and the ritual of fusion or merging of the Sisters of St Joseph Goulburn and the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Around the world many other Sisters watched the Mass and ritual streamed live to their computers. Read more….

Sisters Write Their Own History

Bold and Humble HeaderORANGE, CA – The Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange recently celebrated the centenary of their founding in California.   They used this occasion to write a book describing their 100 year journey through the eyes of their Sisters, both living and deceased. A Bold and Humble Love:  Journey of Faith, is authored by Sister Mary Therese Sweeney and Sister Eileen McNerney.  Using a number of historical resources as well as first person accounts, the authors explored the critical issues faced by the congregation and the decisions and adaptations that the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange have made in response to the impact and challenges of world, national and ecclesial events.  Anyone interested can order the book via the website at http://csjorange.org/book/.

Mary Flick Professes Vows

ST. LOUIS – On a gray Sunday morning, 200 people shared the light of the world with Sister Mary Flick as she took her first vows as a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Sister Mary is a native of north county St. Louis and a proud graduate of Rosary High School. She has a bachelor’s degree in communications from Maryville College and a master’s in religious studies from St. Louis University. Read more…


Upcoming Release on Emerging Religious Life

ST. LOUIS – Sister Amy Hereford, CSJ has an upcoming publication that explores the movements in religious life today and the currents that are emerging among the smaller cohorts of younger religious in mainstream communities of religious women. Tracing the history of religious life, including the impact of Vatican II, she examines some of the theological sources for the reinvention of religious life today. Exploring the current situation of religious, she re-imagines the meaning of vows, community, and mission, and examines how the emerging forms of religious life will fit into an emerging church. New Generation of Leadership

Anti Trafficking Coalition featured in the news

The efforts of the Beaver County Anti Human Trafficking Coalition were featured in the February 25 edition of the Beaver County Times. The two-page spread included a main article on the formation of an anti-human trafficking response team and coalition in the county in partnership with the Sisters of St. Joseph. Dublin Community Sale for Ghana

When I visited St. Louis for the Forum “Zeal for Healing the Neighbourhood of God’s Sacred Universe” I met up with our Sisters from Ghana. They were selling hand made jewellery fortheir mission. I was deeply touched and impressed. I promised Sister Ditty that I would have a community sale for their work. However, it has taken me a long time to get organized, but it was a promise I was determined to keep. Read more… page 7

New Generation of Leadership

LA GRANGE – CSJ Sisters who are participants and mentors in a year-long Leadership Program met in La Grange Park, IL January 18-20 to conclude a year of focusing together on leadership development. Time was spent naming and celebrating the gifts and graces of this program and exploring what leadership might look like for us in this 21st century world of breakdowns and breakthroughs. Read more…. Sr Myree wins 20-year battle for boarding house reform

SYDNEY – Sr Myree Harris rsj of the Coalition of Appropriate Supported Accomodation (CASA) has scored a victory in her 20-year advocacy of reform standards and regulations on boarding houses. The result of her dedication is new legislation which offers more protection and better living conditions for the poor, elderly, frail and disabled tenants of assisted boarding houses, reports Catholic Communications Sydney. A Vision Shared Brings to Birth a New Network

AUSTRALIA – Sometimes people wonder about the impact the canonisation of Mary MacKillop had on individuals and society as a whole. Adrian Thompson the Coordinator of Josephite Community Aid (JCA) led the youth pilgrimage to Rome for Mary’s canonisation. While in Rome in the midst of all the celebrations, Adrian heard the call to set up a network of young adults around the world – young adults who find themselves in the Josephite homeland with a passion for making a difference with a Josephite heart. UNITED KINGDOM – A two-day Conference on “The Future of Consecrated Life in the United Kingdom and Europe” was held in the parish of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Hayes, Middlesex in May 2012. AUSTRALIA – Recently Sister Anne Derwin shared her reflection on the Second Vatican Council at a WATAC conference. During this address Anne spoke of her experience of talking with Sisters of Saint Joseph who took their first vows 50 years ago – January 1962. With enthusiasm and with a 50 year perspective, she recalls living through the council and its reception. Read more…

USA – Sister Mary Peter McGinty, CSJ, Ph.D. shares reflections on Vatican II fifty years later. After completing her studies in theology under Bernard Cooke at Marquette University, and teaching systematic theology for five years at the major seminary in Mundelein, Ill., she joined the theology faculty at Loyola University Chicago for thirty-five years. Now, as Professor Emerita, she serves as theology teacher and consultant, especially as called upon by the congregation. Read more….

‘There’s nothing else I’d rather be than a Sister of St. Joseph’

NEW YORK — Sister Lynn Caton made her final profession as a Sister of St. Joseph of Brentwood Sept. 8, but her journey toward that day has been an interesting one. Before she realized her call to religious life, Sister Lynn was married and had a son. “I’m absolutely called to be a mother,” she said. “And I’m absolutely called to be a Sister of St. Joseph, and it’s beyond my imagination that I have both.” Read more….


I Want to Go to the Novitiate

PHILADELPHIA – I  want to go to the novitiate,” I stated boldly to my formation director. We both knew these words were coming, but stating my desire forthrightly brought with them a certain fortitude. The words floated with an air of certitude and conviction, unlike the words I had spoken when asking to become a “candidate” with the Sisters of St. Joseph, words I had wished I could put back in my mouth as soon as I spoke them. Celebrations in East Timor

EAST TIMOR – Wednesday 8 August was celebrated in a special way this year in Dili with the blessing and opening of a new building of Mary MacKillop Institute, the name by which we are known in East Timor. The facilities include a three bedroomed convent for Sisters, classrooms, offices, music suites, toilets, areas for woodworking and other projects. Read more….


20-year journey to Slovak Republic

SLOVAK REPUBLIC – When Sisters Mary Savoie and Margaret Nacke first went to Eastern Europe almost 20 years ago to help sisters who had survived communism, they really didn’t know what to expect. Westbury Tasmania – May 24, 1887

Sisters, family and friends of the Tasmanian Sisters of Saint Joseph gathered for the celebration of the Mass to mark the 125th Anniversary of the Sisters arrival in Tasmania. This took place in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Westbury the foundation place for the Sisters in 1887. Archbishop Doyle was the principal celebrant along with many priests of the Archdiocese. Transformations

Novices in Peru Looking Forward to First Profession of Vows.

PERÚ – Sisters Felicita Sanchez and Agripina Morales, novices in the Peru Vice Province, have now begun their studies at the Marcelino Champagnat University in Lima. They are enthusiastic about their studies and are learning to balance their responsibilities both to their classes and to the community. Both of these women have asked to make their first vows in the congregation and will celebrate this happy occasion on May 1. Sister Zaida Perez is directing them. Read more….


Transformation of Religious Life

USA – The Religious Formation Conference (RFC) invited participation in Spring 2012 in one of five workshops to be held across the US. Topics include Mission; Theology and Spirituality of Religious Life; Congregational Life and Discernment; and Skills for Life and Mission. These workshops are designed especially for congregational members committed to shaping the future of a prophetic Religious Life, including elected leaders, formators, general membership and new members. Sisters Mary Pellegrino (Baden), Amy Hereford (St. Louis) and Jeanne Branchaud (Springfield) are among the Sisters of St. Joseph who participated.  Read more….


12 Marks Conversations

USA – Sisters of St. Joseph are joining other religious women in the minority cohort (ages 20-60) as they sense the urgency to commit themselves to the future of religious life as it is emerging today. They find themselves longing for community living that energizes for mission. Beginning in advent 2011, they have engaged in a process of contemplation and a shared circle with religious across the US and Mexico in process to explore what this might mean for them. The process will come to its completion on Pentecost when the women will explore moving into action. Read more….


Gathering of the Future

RACINE, WI – Some representatives of the newer and younger Sisters of St. Joseph gathered for a conference in Racine WI in April planned and led by some of the formation directors who guided conferences and reflections for the women gathered there. This gathering generally occurs every other year.


Labyrinth Workshop

SPRINGFIELD, MA –  Sister of St. Joseph Lorry Villemaire will present a labyrinth workshop titled “Call to Universal Wholeness” Saturday, June 2nd from 9:00 – 2:00 at the Mont Marie Senior Residence in Holyoke. Children and adults walk the portable labyrinth at Mont Marie in this file photo.The program, sponsored by the Labyrinth Connection of Western Massachusetts in collaboration with the YMCA of Greater Westfield, will feature a day of relaxation, retreat and rejuvenation. Community Garden

CONCORDIA, KS – The Concordia Community Garden of Hope has been awarded a $2,150 grant through the Kansas Community Gardens Project, a joint initiative of the Kansas Health Foundation and K-State Research and Extension. The Concordia garden is one of only 24 projects in the state to receive this funding, which will help pay to build raised garden beds for those with limited mobility and to purchase compost tumblers. Healthcare Seminar on the Web

ONLINE – The Affordable Healthcare Act (Healthcare reform) is one of the most significant pieces of legislation to positively impact the poor in the United States in recent history.  It is also one of the most misunderstood. The US Federation of the Sisters of St. Joseph sponsored a presentation by Ascension Health about the Affordable Healthcare Act. The Sisters of St. Joseph co-sponsor Ascension Health.


St. Joseph Day 2012

Australia – Sisters of St. Joseph around the world celebrated March 19. Saint Joseph, as Sister Anne Derwin Congregational Leader  recently spoke of,  is the one “who in the scriptures was certainly one of the least through whom and with whom God’s mission was exercised.”  The work begun by Mary MacKillop and Julian Tenison Woods continues to respond to the needs of those least in society and church. The 2012 Gathering of Sisters in Their 20s and 30s

20s and 30s 2012Over Martin Luther King weekend, 18 sisters from 15 different congregations gathered at Our Lady of Guadalupe Monastery for the annualGiving Voicegathering of sisters in their 20s and 30s. Latinamerica at the UN

Stopping Human Trafficking

INDIANA – The Sisters of St. Joseph and ten other orders of Catholic women religious in Indiana and Michigan Are working against Human Trafficking. They invests in hotel chains to affect social change. The group is collaborating with state and local officials to curb human trafficking during festivities leading up to the February 5 Super Bowl in Indianapolis. Incidents of human trafficking—or modern-day slavery—tend to spike alongside major sporting events like the Olympics, the World Cup and the Super Bowl to meet the high demand for commercial sex.  Read more….

LOUIS – On January 11 St. Louis’ Nix Conference and Meeting Management took a historic step to help end child sex trafficking when they became the first to sign the ECPAT Meeting Planners Code of Conduct (End Child Prostitution and Sex Trafficking). “The Sisters of St. Joseph are the catalysts for where we are today,” says Kimberly Ritter, senior account manager at Nix and coordinator of their child sex trafficking initiative. Sisters join forces to strengthen Aboriginal Ministries

AUSTRALIA – A new partnership is being forged between the Sisters of St Joseph, the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, the Sisters of Mercy and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to strengthen their commitment to ministry with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Instigated by the Sisters of St Joseph, this partnership is still in its early stages and may involve other congregations as it develops. Read more….


Food Drive Celebrating Consecrated Life

PITTSBURGH – The Sisters of St. Joseph will honor the past, present and future of consecrated life by hosting a food drive to celebrate World Day of Consecrated Life on Sunday, February 5th, at the Motherhouse, 1020 State Street in Baden. Sisters will be available to accept items between 9 a.m. and noon at the chapel and reception area of the Motherhouse. The Sisters also invite the public to join them for 10 a.m. Mass.

“Our hope for the project is to not only welcome people into our motherhouses as a way of celebrating the gift and call of consecrated life,  but to also provide an opportunity, through the food drive, to welcome people into our mission and ministries, as well,” said Mary Pellegrino, Congregational Moderator for the Sisters of St. Joseph. Red de América Latina

PERÜ – El 17 de diciembre se llevo a cabo la reunión de la Red de América Latina y del Caribe vía Skype, estamos en espera de la respuesta del Comité Global San José, para participar en la Cumbre de las Naciones Unidas que se llevará a cabo en Brasil del próximo año. Estamos contentas con la página web de la Red, que está a cargo la Hna. Adeli y estamos agradecidas por la respuesta de las responsables de cada congregación que están enviando las noticias. También, ya se vienen organizando la comisión del Encuentro de las Hermanas Jóvenes de
San José, que se realizará en el 2013. La próxima reunión de la Comisión de la Red se realizara en Curitiba – Brasil los días 18 al 22 de Junio. Para prepararnos a esta reunión nos encontraremos vía Skype en abril, la Hna. Josefa nos convocará. Leer mas….

Occupy Wall Street

NEW YORK – Sister Susan Wilcox, CSJ as part of Occupy Faith NYC participated in the third anniversary of Occupy Wall Street by challenging the most powerful church in NYC, Trinity Wall Street.  Trinity Wall Street, an Episcopal Church is also a billion dollar land owner having been given substantial pre-revolutionary land grants which are owned by the church not the diocese.  Led by Episcopal Bishop George Packard (retired), Sister Susan, three other Episcopal priests and two Catholic priests scaled the wall of Trinity Land Trust property on Canal and 6thAvenue. The Civil Disobedience was after multiple failed diplomatic attempts to convince the Vestry that OWS use of the land was more in line with the Gospel than leaving it vacant.  A total of 49 were arrested by Trinity Wall Street in that action in which having clergy present helps to provide witness to improper procedure.  When asked about the action, Fr. Juan Carlos Ruiz, said, “I just couldn’t let those kids go in alone [to make a statement about corporate greed] and get beat up again.” Read more….

Person of the Year 2011

NEW YORK – Sister Elizabeth Johnson, CSJ has been named the 2011 Person of the Year by the National Catholic Reporter. In its choice, the NCR praises her work, her influence as a scholar and theologian and her grace under pressure as she responded to the criticism of her book The Quest for the Living God. It called into question the lack of process by the USCCB in their public criticism of this text without any prior notification to the author or providing any opportunity for honest dialogue about issues with which they disagreed. CONCORDIA, KS – Two novices from the US Federation Novitiate are traveling to many CSJ sites and congregations. They visited the sisters at Concordia Kansas in January 2012. Their two-week stay with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia is part of their education as novices to understand that the Sisters of St. Joseph extend beyond just their individual congregations.
